Naim Dehghany is a Los Angeles-based guitarist and music instructor. He earned a B.M. in guitar performance from UCLA, graduating with honors in 2017, and is currently completing his master's degree at UC Irvine. He honed his pedagogical chops through an intense roster of private students but learned the finer nuances of communication working with large groups in other educational domains. Notably, his stint teaching guitar at Los Osos High School proved a pivotal experience. Additionally, his work as a TA at UCI, collaborations with the music departments at LA Valley College, as a tutor and substitute, and Orange Coast College during a year-long internship were early milestones.
Over the last decade, Naim has served a diverse population reflective of Southern California’s cosmopolitanism and a testament to the universal adoration for music and guitar in particular. Young and old are equally drawn to the guitar. Naim’s students have ranged as old as six and as young as sixty-six, spanning every skill level, with beginning teens comprising the majority. Naim's repertoire is a varied mix of classical, rock/metal, funk, blues, ragtime, old-time/bluegrass music, but he specializes in classical guitar and funk. Thus, while all students will invariably learn note reading and the fundamentals of music theory, each student will focus on a musical style based on their interest and available instrument.
Naim's teaching philosophy revolves around positively reinforcing each student's strengths, cultivating individualized tastes unhindered by arbitrary conventions. His eclectic approach organically integrates technique, theory, history, and musicianship. Naim's highest aspiration is a steadfast refusal to give up on any willing student no matter how difficult the learning challenge.
